Ethiopia is a home of many genetically diversified species. It is also one of the 12 countries which are known in their rich wild life resources. Researchers in this field suggest that among the different species 31 mammals, 17 birds, 14 reptiles, 30 amphibians, 7 arthropods, 4 fish, and 12 percent of the seven are endemic to Ethiopia. There are 8 reserves, 18 controlled hunting areas, 4 sanctuaries and 15 national parks in the country. Among these the following 11 national parks and 2 sanctuaries are being administered by the federal government.

  1. Awash National Park

Year of establishment: 1966 G.C

Area: 756 sq.km

Found: in Afar and Oromia regions 215 Km away from Addis Ababa (the capital city).

Key species: Beisa Oryx, Lesser Kudu, Waterbuck, Soemmerrings Gazzale, Hamadryas and Anubis Baboon.

Unique physical feature: Water fall, Hotsprings, Fentale Crater & Doumplam forest.

  1. Semien Mountains National Park

Year of establishment: 1966 G.c

Area: 412 sq.km

Found: in Amhara Region 800 km away from Addis Ababa.

Key species: Walia Ibex, Ethiopian Wolf & Gelada Baboon.

Unique physical feature: Mt. Ras Dashen, Ethiopia’s highest peak, 4543 mts asl.

  1. Omo National Park

Year of establishment: 1967 G.C

Area: 3566 sq.km

Found: in Southern NNP region 867 km away from Addis Ababa

Key species: Common Eland Buffalo, Elephant, Cheetah, Lion, Giraffe, Topi, Brazza’s Monkey.

Unique physical feature: Omo and Mui rivers.
